Who's that, standing in the breach like a giant among men, fighting with skill and integrity on behalf of the huddled masses.......?
Washington (CNN)- Speaker (Mighty) John Boehner and other top House GOP leaders are meeting Monday afternoon to discuss their options and consider preparing their own bill to raise the nation's debt ceiling.
One senior House Republican leadership aide tells CNN that if negotiations don't speed up in the Senate and something doesn't get moving soon, it could be difficult to reach a deal before Thursday's debt ceiling deadline because of possible time-consuming procedural hurdles in the Senate.
But this aide tells CNN "it would have to be a Republican only bill" and unlikely to be simply a clean short term increase in the debt ceiling."
This aide doesn't believe that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi would signal that House Democrats could support any measure while the White House and Senate Democrats are still negotiating their own deal.
What House GOP leaders would attach to their own debt bill is "still very much in the air" and could potentially have an Obamacare related item on it, adds the aide.
But the aide admits Republican leaders are still monitoring the bipartisan negotiations in the Senate, and says it's too early to tell whether some version of the proposal by Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia could get much GOP support, but acknowledges it won't be enough for many conservatives.
