Former GOP Gov. Mark Sanford is neck and neck with Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch going into South Carolina's special congressional election Tuesday, a new poll has found.
According to a survey of 1,239 likely South Carolina voters by the Democratic-affiliated Public Policy Polling, Sanford is leading Colbert Busch 47 percent to 46 percent, well within the poll's margin of error.
The new survey taken over the weekend marks a dramatic turnaround in the race. Just two weeks ago, the same poll found Colbert Busch ahead of Sanford by 9 percentage points after the news broke that Sanford's ex-wife was suing him for trespassing at her house in February.
"The special election in South Carolina couldn't be much closer," said Dean Debnam, the president of PPP. "At this point it's just a question of whether voters are more put off by Mark Sanford or the Democrats in Washington."
Colbert Busch's unfavorability rating has grown 13 percent over the last two weeks from 31 percent to 44 percent, and just 24 percent of respondents approve of her performance compared to 61 percent who disapprove.
According to Politico, the results suggest that Sanford's recent offensive to tie Colbert Busch to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Party leadership has successfully increased her negative ratings in the Republican-leaning 1st Congressional District.
