Shawn Custis, 42, was identified as the suspect captured on film mercilessly beating a woman in front of her child, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Millburn Police Chief Gregory G. Weber announced today.


Arrest warrants have been issued for Custis whose last known address was in Newark, and authorities have charged him with first- degree attempted murder, robbery, burglary and endangering the welfare of a child, Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, said in a release.

On June 21, authorities allege, the suspect forcibly entered the woman’s Cypress Street home at approximately 10 a.m., where she was with two young children.

A video released by Millburn police show a man brutally assaulting the woman, punching and kicking her as her daughter sat on the living room couch clutching a blanket. Her 18-month old son slept upstairs.

The video shows the intruder making three trips upstairs to rifle through the family’s belongings, while repeatedly assaulting the woman.

The victim is recovering from a number of non-life threatening injuries – a concussion, chipped teeth, an injured lip, facial swelling and leg injuries. She somehow didn’t break any bones, and has been released from the hospital in the days since the attack.

What SHOULD be done is he should either be backed up against a wall and shot,or hanged. Not 10 or 20 years down the road,but within 10 or 20 hours. However long it would take to have a hearing to establish without a shadow of a doubt that he was the attacker.
