“We have never made good on our promises.” – Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau, May 1939
Right-leaning media outlets were sent a flutter last week when columnist Charles Krauthammer supposedly “SCHOOLED” (all caps!) comedian Jon Stewart about the virtues of contemporary conservatism. The headmaster’s lesson, however, disavowed his apparently antiquated ideological forebears who opposed FDR’s New Deal:
“The conservative idea is not that government has no role. You might have argued that in the thirties when conservatives opposed the New Deal. There’s no question of accepting the great achievements of liberalism — the achievements of the New Deal . . .”
So ingrained are the supposed mythological “achievements” of the New Deal that a bright fellow like Mr. Krauthammer forcefully endorses its premise, and critics are labeled “immoral.”
But the passage of time has allowed for a factual and critical reexamination of the period, and the results aren’t pretty. In truth the New Deal in many (many) instances failed those who needed it most and benefited the well-off. And its political, legal, and cultural legacy still negatively reverberates today.
.... The idea that you rescue the elderly and don’t allow the elderly to enter into destitution is a consensual idea that conservatives, at least the mainstream of conservatives —the Welfare State no longer fits.....
Krauty was a full out Leftist up until the late 80's. He worked for Carter and Mondull. He never voted for Reagan yet people praise him as the smartest Conservative mind around. Like hell.
I guess he does. He made a pretty obsequious interview actually. Grovelled before Stewart like a little girl, wanting to be part of the "cool kids".
Personally, I'm a pragmatist. Go after the low hanging fruit first: public union pensions, politically popular targets like EBT and welfare, illegal immigrants, etc.... before going into the harder targets like SS and medicare.
My favorite idea on SS and Medicare? Make them optional. That throws the ball back at the Democrats for wanting to limit people's choice. Should be popular with the younger crowd too.

IIRC, didn't Bush propose something along that line regarding SS? He was crucified for his efforts. And before that, Gingrich's completely out-of-context comments ("die on the vine") were used to scare Granny and Gramps quite effectively.
In dealing with the democrat party and their allies in the media, you are dealing with completely dishonest and corrupt people. They are NOT interested in solving problems - just demonizing. And advancing statism.
No one in the gop seems to have the 'nads to overcome that.
You're a brave man. Go and break through the lines. And remember, while you're out there risking your life and limb through shot and shell, we'll be in be in here thinking what a sucker you are. ~Rufus T. Firefly

Wrong.
The GOP, led by Mighty John Boehner and Mitch The Magnificent McConnell has completely stymied Obama's legislative initiatives since 2011.
Manchin-Toomey....a masterful, well earned, victory for the MTMMcC!
MTMMcC and MJB out-foxed Obama and the Democrats on the sequester....to the benefit of our great nation!
