This is a bit odd given all the negative reaction a possible Hagel appointment has already generated. I wonder if Obama thinks Democrats will support his choice just so he will not be embarrassed. Since I am no fan of Chuckie I hope he doesn't get confirmed should Obama nominate him as that would reflect badly on The One, which is a good thing. Nonetheless this report from Politico states Hagel is to get the nod.

This ain't going to make Zero look bad if Hagel isn't confirmed. The Leftists are already spinning that if he doesn't make it, it will just because of more GOP obstruction blocking a Right Wing war hero from a post because they hate the President that much. Poor Zero went out of his way to reach across the aisle with Hagel don'tcha know.
Good point, FC: The Leftists are already spinning that if he doesn't make it, it will just because of more GOP obstruction blocking a Right Wing war hero from a post because they hate the President that much. Poor Zero went out of his way to reach across the aisle with Hagel don'tcha know. Can't argue with you there.
This, however, seals the deal for me: Hagel for Secretary of Defense
Hagel has been a member of the Senate intelligence and Armed Services committees. Not sure how his confirmation can be blocked without making the opposing Senators look silly.
A better strategy might be to use the confirmation process to wring some concessions from him.
