We’ve already seen evidence that real-life kids are being saddled unfairly with Common Core-aligned math textbooks that are plain junk. So who wants to see the popular American Girl doll hauling around a Common Core math textbook? A Common Core-aligned Pearson textbook is included in American Girl’s school backpack set.

I feel vindicated We refused to buy or allow these for my daughter. The expense alone was the lesson and she was taunted for not having some which was another learning experience. Now that they are part of this agenda I hope they all off the radar all together
When my mother died a dear friend of hers signed me up for the American Girl catalogue. I was so frustrated by this woman. She was thinking of grandmothers, granddaughters and dollies. She thought she was nurturing motherhood and that mother-daughter bond by leading us down this path.
My daughter believed that her Granny would have wanted her to have one of these dolls. The only doll she ever wanted was an American girl doll. She got one for Christmas.
She never showed interest in another doll. I never bought her another one.
I still feel guilty about buying the doll. My mother would have been dismayed at the cost. Her voice of disproval still rings in my head.

I don't know how we got signed up for the catalogue, but we did. I think our zip. But we never let her have one. She was a good kid, we explained and she accepted it.
When she was excluded from games with freinds because she didnt have one it was heartbreaking. She has a reasonably priced other doll....not good enough for the "in crowd".But that again was an important lesson.
We all learned from that because the kids were in grade school but the mothers never stepped in to guide their daughters to be inclusive. I can't get inside their heads, all I know is they were ok with hurting a little girls feelings over a doll.

I blame the teachers. They promote the books. Then at Halloween the little girls show up with the dolls and wearing full costumes of the character of the doll.
There are better books out there that have more substance for girls to read. The teachers are lazy. If the girls want to read the book because it is popular the teachers cannot be bothered to direct them to better literature. Too often the excuse is made that as long as they are reading something, it doesn't matter what they read.
We know this isn't true. And parents who are aware try to lead their children to better books. The problem is that the teachers don't direct the girls or their parents to better books. It's frustrating. I asked and asked. The teachers never had a lot of advice about books for me. It's like they were saying that the books they allowed were the approved books. All others fell by the wayside.
Now I am the ibrarian at my church. When I ask parents about books they tell me I should ask the teachers at the schools. When I demur they look at me like I'm ignoring a valuable resource.
Bah!
