I don't know what virus scan product that you may have installed, but typically these ads/trackers aren't considered "viruses" per se.
They are a completely different animal. If you read around a bit on the Ghostery site, they will explain in a fair amount of detail (in pretty understandable language) exactly what these little beasts are. In a nutshell, Ghostery and other products like it: - block the display of ads - defeat personal info trackers and - stop malicious cookies.

Did you install Ghostery? (If I recall correctly the install script will ask you to shutdown all of your open browsers, then complete the install.) When you re-start your browsers Ghostery will be active and you will never see another ad.

Hmmm..............it took a while after I installed it, but now it appears that the ads are gone.
Great! Ever so often (especially if you see any of the 3pes in the purple box without a line through them) click on the Ghostery button, then Options to update your blocking lists. I always select them all to completely block everything. And so far, I have not noticed any degradation in performance.
