WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama on Thursday will name Mary Jo White, a former star prosecutor who pursued terrorists and mobsters in New York, to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission, a White House official said.
If confirmed by the Senate, Ms. White would be the first former prosecutor to head the agency in its more than 80-year history. The move could signal a desire to get tougher on Wall Street.
Mr. Obama also will name Richard Cordray for another term leading the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the White House official said. The president used a recess appointment last year to put Mr. Cordray in the position in order to get around Congress, where the new consumer bureau is controversial. The appointment runs out at the end of the year.
