BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Authorities in Alabama say a man opened fire in a hospital, wounding an officer and two employees before he was fatally shot by police.

Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams says the officer and employees suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Williams says police were called because a man with a gun was walking through St. Vincent's Hospital on Saturday morning. When he was confronted by officers, he started shooting and wounded one of the officers. That's when the second officer shot and killed the man.

Detectives are still working to determine why the armed man was in the hospital.

What is the policy of guns in hospitals? Are security guards armed?

I don't know. Going off my memory from fairly recent hospital visits in my area, I don't recall seeing any armed security guards.

Interesting. No armed guns in schools, hospitals, post offices.

No, and I heard from someone today about what John Lott said last night on Coast to Coast.

The guy that murdered everyone in the Aurora, CO shooting: there are 7 theaters in that area (John Lott lives in the neighborhood). The purpose of this guy was to kill as many people as possible; there was a theater just down the street which allows for greater crowds, yet it was not the 'target site' for the shooter. Instead, the murderer picked a smaller venue to accomplish his purpose. Why could that be? Answer: the chosen theater was the ONLY theater which had a sign posted "no concealed firearms allowed".

John Lott stated there is a connection between the places selected to commit mass murder and there being a posted signs for 'no concealed firearms allowed' in all the past mass murders/major shootings.

Probably depends if the hospital has a secure section for inmate treatment.
