WEBSTER, N.Y. – Four volunteer firefighters responding to a pre-dawn house fire were shot Monday morning, two fatally, leading to a shootout in suburban Rochester, N.Y. with the alleged gunman found dead the scene, police said.
A lone gunman fired at the firefighters after they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore, just east of Rochester, Town of Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.
The shooter was found dead after a short pursuit with cops according to Pickering. It was not immediately clear if the gunshot was self-inflicted. The first Webster police officer who arrived on the scene exchanged gunfire with the shooter.
"It appears to be a trap that was set for responders," Pickering said in a late morning press conference.
Of the four volunteer firefighters, two were fatally shot including Tomasz Kaczowka and Mike Chiapperini, who was also a lieutenant and public information officer for the local police department. ------ The two volunteers who survived were taken to University of Rochester Medical Center were they were listed in guarded condition in the intensive care unit, according to hospital officials with one suffering severe injuries to his pelvis.
A sadistic gunman killed two firefighters and wounded three other first responders in western New York this morning after setting a blaze to lure victims into shooting range, officials said.
Cops identified the killer as ex-con William Spengler, 62. He traded fire with cops before he eventually blew his brains out, said Webster police chief Gerald Pickering
“It does appear it was a trap that was set for ... first responders,” Pickering said. “Causative reasons, we don’t have at this time.”
Spengler shot from a berm that gave him a clear, deadly angle on the firefighters.
“He took a position of cover to be a sniper to shoot the first responders,” Pickering said.

The owner of 191 Lake Road is listed as 62-year-old gunman. Spengler did time 17 years behind bars for manslaughter, according to state corrections records.
Spengler killed his grandmother, Rose Spengler, in 1980 before his conviction in 1981, according to both radio and TV stations WHAM. He was released in 1998 and conditions of his parole ended in 2006.
“He killed his grandmother, pushed her down the stairs,” former neighbor Roger Vercruysse, 64, told The Post. “We never did find out why.”
After prison, Spengler returned to his family home he shared with his mother Arline and sister Cheryl. He lived off disability payments and spent much of the time taking care of the home.
“He never had a job that I ever knew of,” Vercruysse said. “He just took care of his mama.”
Arline Spengler died this past October.
"He was real close to his mother," the neighbor said.
Cops also just said Spengler's sister is "unaccounted for."
“He stayed on one side of the house and she stayed in another,” Vercruysse said. “He told me never liked his sister. He hated his sister but loved his mama. Maybe when his mama passed away he went nuts.”
Here's a little update on the criminally insane nutcase who should have been in prison for beating his grandmother to death. Thanks to the the effed up judicial system who thought it just fine to release him back into civil society where he could do what he liked doing best, killing people.
A homicidal maniac -- bent to “do what I like doing best: killing people" -- left a chilling suicide note before torching his neighborhood and murdering two firefighters, police said today.
Ex-con William Spengler Jr., a loser mama’s boy who once spent 17 years in prison for beating his grandmother to death, penned a murderous three-page missive, telling the world why he turned a quiet lakeside neighborhood into hell on earth.
“I still have to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down and do what I like doing best: killing people,” Spengler wrote his suicide note, made public by police.
Spengler, 62, set his home -- in the tight-knit, upstate town of Webster, just outside Rochester -- ablaze early yesterday morning to lure volunteer firefighters to the scene. The gutless killer then methodically shot four of those fireman, two fatally, before blowing his brains out.
"There was no motive in the note...there were some ramblings in there, said Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering told reporters this morning. “There was intelligence information that we obtained that our investigators need to follow up on. It spoke mainly that he intended to burn his neighborhood down and kill as many people as possible."
Four whiskey bottles, filled with gasoline, were found unspent against his house, law enforcement sources told WHEC-TV.
UPSTATE MADMAN SETS BLAZE TO LURE FIREFIGHTERS TO DEATH
Spengler ignited his deadly blaze with a flare gun that was recovered at the scene, the local NBC affiliate reported.
The sadistic killer was found with a pistol, shotgun and semi-automatic AR-15 rifle with 30-shot magazine, police said.
As a convicted felon, Spengler had no legal right to possess guns so cops want to trace those weapons.
A convicted felon can get a gun anytime he wants one. Obama and the other lefties want to come after our guns...not the felons that will have them regardless of the law...
This man was pure evil so I have a bad feeling about his sister.
WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) — Police have found human remains in the burned-out home of the Webster, N.Y., ex-con who killed two firefighters and believe the victim is the gunman's sister.
Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Tuesday the remains were found in the charred house that 62-year-old William Spengler shared with his 67-year-old sister, Cheryl. A medical examiner will need to determine the identity. ------ Spengler killed himself as seven houses burned around him. A friend said Spengler hated his sister but police say a motive hasn't been determined.
I really do detest the liberal do gooders in these kinds of cases. It goes back to WTF's thread on evil. So many of the libs truly don't grasp the concept that some people are just evil.
