Everyone is celebrating this morning that initial jobless claims fell more than expected, after last week’s number was revised upward. But only in the Obama economy do we celebrate 344,000 Americans losing their jobs.
Fewer Americans than forecast filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, showing companies were looking beyond looming government spending cuts and maintaining staffing.
Jobless claims decreased by 22,000 to 344,000 in the holiday-shortened week that ended Feb. 23, the Labor Department reported today in Washington. The median forecast of 44 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for 360,000 applications. The number of people collecting unemployment insurance dropped to the lowest level since June 2008.
But it’s not all good news.
Almost perfectly offsetting this choppiness in the main headline data is the swings in Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits which rose 8.5% or 187k this week. One thing is for sure, the last two months have seen an unprecedented amount of noise in the claims data that we can only put down to seasonally-affected-disorder (or statistical idiocy with 5 sigma swings each week).
Also in the news this week, durable goods orders fell a whopping 5.2% in January, which doesn’t bode well. Neither does the anemic 0.1% revised 4th quarter 2012 GDP growth. But I’m sure the media will just report all of the “good news” today. Yay!

8.5% increase in jobless benefits, happy days are here, happy days are here again. Where is that lie about recovery, the oly place booming is washington dc, and they have a whole lot more tax dollars to hand out after their cut, moolah city.
I am not a republican I am a conservative, and supporter of the rule of law. And if you do not like that too bad.
This amount of people out of work is such a crock. It is much more. And they go buy who collects unemployment?
Did you know that if you work one day a week, you cannot collect unemployment? So, this type of stuff throws their numbers way off.
My son in law is in the construction line of work. Since Oct, there has been very little work. Most weeks have him working a day or two. The only time he can apply to collect is if he is out a full week. Heh..and this is union work. It almost looks to me like its done on purpose...throw them a day or two here and there and they wont be able to collect.
And..he doesnt even want to collect. A weekly unemployment check is peanuts. He wants to work.
I heard those clowns at fox news this morning saying housing was coming back, that is a total crock, no jobs and you have a rebound in housing. They are selling house to people without a credit check and no money down if that is happening. Historical fact on houseing. Housing does not increase during the start of the year, january, february and march are historically poor months in real estate, and sells pick up the first of may. Further every recession we have ever had, real estate leads into the recession and laggs coming out of the recession. Always been that way.

If you want to get a good idea of the unemployment rate, the blue line on the graph below includes all those in the civilian labor force who are unemployed, all those in the civilian labor force who are working part time who need full time work, and all those who have been bumped out of the civilian labor force who need a job:
There are actually two set of unemployment data kept by the BLS.
The unemployment rate is calculated based upon a monthly Household Survey taken by the BLS. The information is supplied by individuals
The number of jobs created is based upon a monthly Payroll Survey taken by the BLS. The information is supplied by businesses.
The actual numbers of people who collect unemployment are used once a year to adjust the Payroll Data in what is called a benchmark adjustment.
The main ways the PTB 'enhance' the unemployment rate are by adjusting the formulas used to calculate seasonal adjustments, and used to determine which category you fall into.
