Hippies were rude, dirty, Satan worshipers, according to a paragraph that apparently appears in a Louisiana state-funded school’s history book.

The book, entitled “America: Land I love” is an eighth-grade history textbook that Mother Jones reports is used in at least one Louisiana voucher school. The textbook is published through Pensacola, Fla.-based A Beka Book.

According to an image obtained at AmericaBlog.com, the passage on hippies paints a stark, unflattering image: “They went to Canada or European countries to escape being drafted into military services. Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these youth became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Rock music played an important part in the hippie movement and had great influence over the hippies. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship.”

Wow. How terrible. This is way worse than omitting the founding fathers, Columbus and Lincoln or calling the Pilgrims terrorist as they do in other text books being taught in public schools.

I think this textbook was written by someone who never knew a hippie. That description ["they went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners"] doesn't begin to capture what was going on at the time. But I guess that doesn't matter because the author probably had heard all about them from someone just like himself who knew what he was talking about, right?

We aren't told what they said about the founding fathers. It couldn't have been very good though, simply because the ff all were white men. Hadn't you heard?

One more fact is the vouchers do not fund the text books. The vouchers follow the child. It is the same amount of money that every student is allocated for education. There are only 5,000 or so students statewide. Some of the schools only have one or two slots per grade if that much.

I've not been impressed with the Beka curriculum. I think the parents of these students need to read this text book. Parents should familiarize themselves with what their children are learning be it at a voucher or public school.

I had no idea that Easy Rider was a documentary T-Bird.

Truth be told I was a hippie. [please everyone remain calm]

And I find nothing in my life looking back that coincided with this textbook's description of who I was. So what does that mean? Either I wasn't typical or that author is feeding his own prejudices with his accumulated ignorance. The worst lie is the Satan worshipers part. The most accurate part was the use of drugs and the loosening of sexual morals. The theme of the sixties was after all, "Love One Another" certainly not worship the devil. If one was honest in that quest to Love one Another it had a way of leading you to the Truth. God created this Universe with moral laws and if one breaks those laws with abandon the consequences mount up. Take drugs for recreation and soon all you can say is "Wow Man!" Practise sex with the one you're with and soon the toll of selfishness creates a hardness in the soul.

Oh well, my hippie days were numbered thankfully. I found the Lord as a result of the Navigators holding a mission outpost in Boulder. I then changed my description of myself to Jesus Freak. Ever heard of them? They were the dirty ones who had been washed by Jesus. Now I'm simply identified as a Christian. I dropped the "freak" part. Never was able to go more than one day without a bath, always carried a toothbrush whereever I went, never was prone to being rude, even before the Lord swept in.

Guess I wasn't a very good hippie.

The history book sounds poorly written.

HOWEVER,

1. There were a somewhat shocking number who participated in various levels of overt and deliberate satan worship.

2. There was a huge percentage who participated in the blazingly rebellious and greatly selfish, unbounded hedonistic seductions satan vigorously offered with the eager cooperation and administration of the oligarchy.

3. There was a huge percentage who partook of various kinds of drugs--particularly pot and LSD.

4. White washing, rationalizing and/or denying those facts is NOT good reality testing.

5. Given human nature . . . satan always has a welcoming audience among those who are outraged by ANY LIMITS on their behaviors.

6. Rigid, sterile, ignorant, Unbiblical RELIGIOIUS legalism and authoritarianism will have to bear a huge percentage of the responsibility for such acting out.

7. DISCIPLINE WITHOUT sufficient emotionally bonded RELATIONSHIP virtually always EQUALS REBELLION.

8. For that reason, many parents outraged at their rebellious youth needed to look in the mirror to find the primary causes.

IIRC, even the Beatles dinked around with Satanism at one point . . . a la Allister Crowley.

I returned from the military and in early 1971 discovered a very popular movement of young people, gathering at Rev. Chuck Smith's Calvary big tent church, alongside the 405 freeway in Costa Mesa, CA. They were called The Jesus People, and they founded the Maranatha music style, as well.

That is pretty good documentation, contrasted with the claim that hippies widely adopted satanic worship, which I never saw or heard of until this goofball stuff.

Satan worshiping hippies don't bother me. Yuppies on the other hand really blow. I hope there is something in that book about them.
