Dr. Benjamin Carson, the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital who garnered national headlines for his pointed remarks at last month’s National Prayer Breakfast, says that President Obama and his political allies are trying to “destroy the country.”

“Let’s say somebody were [in the White House] and they wanted to destroy this nation,” Carson postulated in remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference. “I would create division among the people, encourage a culture of ridicule for basic morality and the principles that made and sustained the country, undermine the financial stability of the nation, and weaken and destroy the military. It appears coincidentally that those are the very things that are happening right now.”

Carson, who is 62, said that the blame for the nation’s current state of affairs does not lie with “any one particular person.” His barbs, though, were clearly aimed at President Obama.

He needs, at least, to be an influence on the Republican party if there's to be any hope of regaining moral rectitude and strength.

I've had the same conversation with our older son and he would come down on your side of the debate.

I don't believe that Christ came to earth for a political solution. Many times we Americans forget that our faith in God cannot bring about what He does not will. We can seek His goodness and righteousness as much as our abilities will allow but we can never reach perfection.

Those who set themselves aside from engaging in the world should never be faulted. If they do this based upon religious principles we actually should lift them up in some measure because they do this out of conviction.

At the same time when we see Christians who engage the culture with positivity and strength we should encourage them.

There can be a balance.

But if this country is to survive, I believe we must have Christ-followers willing to run for political office and to have a positive influence on this secular government.

Our problem is that the Church in this country is weak, and therefore many who are Christians don't have the will to stand up and do the right thing, but rather cave to political pressure and corruption.

I believe that's what we're seeing in the Republican party now......in spades.

I'm reading Eric Metaxis' Bonhoeffer, and have been reflecting on how much we could use a man of his character in Washington right now.

There's hope for America, but it is only in Jesus Christ.

I see America as a lost child, with many of the youngest citizens now living in a hostile opposition to God, not just an apathy. There's the PC culture assault on our culture, there's this fake "green" movement that assaults industrialization and then there's a general falling away of this generation irt the things of God and Church.

Many folk who are gay rights advocates have this raging hostility towards the conservative and Catholic Church. The Church that takes a stand against the blessing of homosexuality or the marriage extension to same-sex couples is having difficulty making the bridge over to those who are lost. This is a very effective and devilish barrier

All this is not to say that the right person cannot overcome these obstacles, [with the Holy Spirit's help] and lead us into a new peace. I've listened to Dr. Carson and he seems to have a divine light to his words and I consider him to be the "salt" that Jesus spoke about.

I hope I get a chance to vote for him.

I do agree with you.

In the instance of those Christians who do not choose to become engaged there could be many reasons why.

I look at the culture and the way our government operates against the will of the people. I do not see that there are many paths to repairing this. We have an obstructionist government.

I don't believe that there is going to be one political giant like Reagan on the horizon. It will take many people doing the heavy lifting.

But many obstructionists will have to be cut down and destroyed in order to rebuild the system. This is going to be a battle for our nation's future. I see things growing much worse before they grow better. I think it will take more than one election cycle. I think many people will have to enter into a world of suffering before they wake up.

This awakening will happen only when they fall to their knees in despair, look around and realize how alone their government has left them. Only then will they be able to listen to the quiet still voice within them that says, "I am here and I am your God."

Only then people will get up from their broken condition and fight back to reclaim all that they have lost. They will have to lose before they understand what they had to begin with, what the generations before them gave them and they took for granted.

I was actually thinking of my stepson.

He wrote recently on his FB about the new Pope, essentially since he has come out against gay marriage that he can go F himself. [to my horror]

there's a hard core lost crowd that is very vocal and self-righteous in their convictions.

I don't hate Dr. Carson.

I believe he has a strong voice and that people do gravitate towards him because of his adherence to Biblical and Founding principles. When I look at him I see a man who can translate ideas to the common person. I do not know that many will wake up to what he has said. There is a lot of hostility towards truth, TM. Look at how the White House badgered him before he spoke at the prayer breakfast. They repeatedly asked him what he was going to say. He couldn't tell them. He is smarter than they are.
