WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says the U.S. now recognizes Syria's main opposition group as the "legitimate representative" of the country's people.
Obama says the Syrian Opposition Council is now "inclusive enough" to be granted greater legitimacy in the international community. The president says that level of recognition comes with responsibility, including making sure the group organizes itself effectively and is committed to a political transition that respects the rights of women and minorities.
The move paves the way for greater U.S. support as the group seeks the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Say, I think I've seen this exact script play out before, yeah, that's it, it was in Libya, not that long ago. Yeah, that's the ticket. We recognize the freedom fighters as the legitimate representatives, then we send an Ambassador, is that guy Chris Stevens available? No, he's dead, oh yeah. We'll find another one then, need someone to facilitate the distribution of guns and heavy armor, yeah that's the ticket. Now we need to get NATO and the Arab League to sanction a No Fly Zone, yeah. Next thing you know Assad is dead and SoS can come up with another witty quip like "We came, we saw, he died." Yeah, that's the ticket alright...
