It's almost a cruel play on words.

You go to the airport and bring that which you know you'll need for the trip. Transportation Security Administration employees rifle though your bags and find that bottle of shampoo that was a little too big or the can of deodorant that had a few too many ounces. They tell you that certain items in your possession cannot be taken on board the flight and you have to leave them behind.

The name they have for those goods is a hoot: "Voluntarily Abandoned Property."

The more people keep flying and allowing their rights to be shredded, coming and going, the more they will persist.

I knew one guy, kept a can opener (those old fashioned little hook kind of things) on his key ring. It was a souvenier from his days in the Army when he was in Korea. He "voluntarily" handed it over when he was not allowed to take it on a plane. This was when the TSA first started, I wonder if they're still so picky - because you know how dangerous those little can openers can be.

Fun piece. Last time I flew I goofed and left an expensive perfumed lotion in my purse. Instead of volunteering to abandon I squirted it into the trash. I was never getting it back and I was not about to give it away

I used to always carry in my purse one of those little travel sewing kits. You never know when a button might pop off or some other repair might be needed. I had that thing confiscated so many times I've lost count, would replace it, and the next time the replacement would get confiscated and so on. Now I don't even bother anymore. :(

And these are just off the top of my head! I don't agree with calling these examples "a hoot" either. They are deliberate attempts to groom our thinking by changing terminology. They are "useful" contortions for the purpose of manipulation. Euphemism is too nice a word.

Euphemism: A mild or indirect word or expression for one too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.

I prefer not to use a contortion to describe anything.

That's right, TM, it is the complete corruption and distortion of the language that you are describing. All on purpose, no accidents here. It is a part of overall Cultural Marxism. Greenfield writes about this often.
(Oh, and it got "dangerous" long ago, now it is at the point of deadly.)
