Civil rights leader Medgar Evers was assassinated outside his Jackson home by a white supremacist June 12, 1963, while his family was inside. Evers dedicated his life to working for racial equality in Mississippi.
His widow, Myrlie Evers-Williams, laments that her husband is remembered primarily as an assassination victim.
"Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual." Thomas Jefferson
