President Obama this morning issued a video response to a White House petition demanding more gun control – specifically mentioning America’s gun culture.

Obama signaled that although he believed in the Second Amendment, most Americans were lawful gun owners who would support his ideas for gun control.

“I am also betting that the majority — the vast majority — of responsible, law-abiding gun owners would be some of the first to say that we should be able to keep an irresponsible, law-breaking few from buying a weapon of war,” he said promoting the idea of an assault rifle ban and ending the sale of high capacity magazines. Obama added that he believed in better background checks, and closing the gun show loophole.

Obama also promised to address the culture in America, “that too often glorifies guns and violence,” as well as school safety and mental health care.

I was able to defeat some gun-grabbers on Facebook yesterday with the single fact that assault rifles are used in only 2% of gun crimes. Statistically insignificant.

It's a purely emotional reaction to the fact that the weapons look vaguely military.

Well so do some squirt guns.

I think he really believes what he says. The Gallup poll is irrelevant - he knows what we need and want, even if we don't. It's a very scary way of thinking.

And, I don't want to be transformed by the big 0. I like most of me the way I am, even though he very clearly does not. Any transformation for me will need to be done by a higher power than 0.

Oh jeesh, that reminds me of Elizabeth Warren during the campaign against Scott Brown. She told her supporters to talk her campaign up.

"When you're in line at the cheese shop, speak to the person behind you."

Also, it is my recent understanding that assault rifles don't spray bullets? They shoot one bullet at a time? (My ignorance of firearms is shameful. I aim to change that soon).
