I knew as soon as Elijah Cummings demanded last week that Thomas Pickering be allowed to testify only in public and not in private, that he was trying to throw a wrench in the Benghazi hearings. And obviously Pickering was working with Cummings and the Democrats to that end and refused to come be deposed privately. This should tell you a lot about Thomas Pickering even if you don’t know who he is.
So Issa pulled out the subpoena card and threw it at Pickering, instructing him to come testify for a taped interview so that he can be deposed properly before that put him in a public hearing. Obviously this outraged Cummings who called it “extreme Republican overreach”. But he’s just angry because his agenda got thwarted and he won’t be able to make a show out of pickering testifying. And that should tell you a lot about Cummings who seems less interested in getting to the truth and more interested in protecting his political interests.
Trey Gowdy weighed in on it today and explained why they subpoenaed Pickering and what they expect to learn from him:
"Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual." Thomas Jefferson
