So what? The churches are like any other business. If they can't survive on their own they deserve to die out. If their own members won't support them financially, why should the taxpayers?
After all,who do they think they are, banks?
sneakypete,
The "SO WHAT" is the point.
Most people do not tithe. Most people let others do the heavy lifting. When that lifting is neglected because of fewer dollars the money will not magically appear. People will start to notice when their church cannot fund a missionary that they have always funded. Or they cannot afford to do as much outreach in the community at the food bank. It will effect more people than just the paid staff of the church.
The community will notice the loss of attention to its needs.
This is the design. Just like Obamacare. Shrink the power of the church to reach the most needy.
More people will run to the state for assistance.
If "the community" notices a loss of attention to it's needs, which usually are limited to teaching members how to apply for "free" government benefits, let them provide the money for their own community.
What would be wrong with that?
And as far as "running to the state for assistance" goes, isn't that what the various organized religions do by claiming tax-exempt status?
Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012)

And the state runs to the church for assistance when it needs more pre-school class space. They pay the churches tax dollars to offer pre-school. It works both ways.
