As I write these lines I am fully aware that these may be the last lines I get to post on this page.

For the sake of Egypt and for historical accuracy, let’s call what is happening by its real name: Military coup.

It has been two and a half years after a popular revolution against a dictatorship that had strangled and drained Egypt for 30 years.

That revolution restored a sense of hope and fired up Egyptians’ dreams of a future in which they could claim for themselves the same dignity that is every human being’s birthright. [...]

Today only one thing matters. In this day and age no military coup can succeed in the face of sizeable popular force without considerable bloodshed. Who among you is ready to shoulder that blame?

Egyptian army: Morsi is no longer president, constitution is suspended

Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, the head of the military, just finished the announcement as I’m writing this. Fun fact: He was appointed by Morsi himself after Gen. Tantawi, the head of the junta that preceded Morsi, was removed to avert his own possible coup attempt. Morsi must have thought Sisi would be more loyal/subservient. Oops.

Tahrir Square has gone berserk — flags, fireworks, cheering. No more Morsi:

Sisi says they tired to negotiate with Morsi since November, but refused. The constitution has been suspended. A technocratic government, run by the ned of the supreme constitutional court, will run the country until elections can be held. The people are ecstatic.

I’ve seen rumors on Twitter that Mohamed ElBaradei will be appointed interim prime minister but can’t find anything solid on that yet. More fallout:

Updates coming, but wrestle with this for now: Is this a U.S.-approved coup or a U.S.-opposed coup? As of yesterday, the answer was clear. As of this morning, it was … less clear. That’s “leading from behind” in action!

Update: More from Business Insider: “Military chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi then called for presidential and parliamentary elections, the establishment of a panel to review the constitution, and a national reconciliation committee that would include youth movements.” Sounds like the next government will be more secular. Will it be more democratic? Does the State Department care at this point?

Update: Interesting news. Sunni clerics blessed the coup?

Egypt’s leading Muslim and Christian clerics and the leader of the liberal opposition alliance Mohamed ElBaradei will jointly present a roadmap for a political transition shortly, state news agency MENA said on Wednesday…

The clerics would be the Grand Sheikh of Cairo’s Al-Azhar institution, a leading authority in the Muslim world, and Pope Tawadros, the head of the Coptic Church and leader of Egypt’s millions of Christians.

There were religious figures onstage with Sisi when he made the announcement but I’m not sure who they were offhand. I believe one was Tawadros; was the head of Al-Azhar there too? I don’t understand at first blush why Sunni clerics would endorse toppling the country’s first Islamist president unless the army somehow made it worth their while. The question now is whether the clerical endorsement will soothe some of the opposition from the Muslim Brotherhood or whether it won’t matter.

Don't forget how these Muslim clerics administer justice. Once they are finished with you, that is your usefulness to them is done, they charge you with treason and execute you. I despised the grin on this guy's face as he held the upper hand in the hostage crisis. But when the tables were turned, he was dismissed. What else do you do with traitors? LONDON, Thursday, Sept. 16— Former Foreign Minister Sadegh Ghotbzadeh of Iran, who was accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian Government and kill Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, was executed Wednesday night, the Iranian press agency said today.

The agency said he went before a firing squad after he was convicted by the army revolutionary tribunal and the verdict was approved by the high judicial court.

Mr. Ghotbzadeh, 46 years old, was arrested in early April after the Iranian authorities accused him of leading a plot to overthrow the Ayatollah's clerical Government.

Twelve accomplices have been tried since the trial of Mr. Ghotbzadeh was completed last month. The press agency reported then that Hojatolislam Mohammadi Reyshari, the investigating judge, had said evidence showed that those charged as co-conspirators planned to kill Ayatollah Khomeini.

It said that Mr. Ghotbzadeh had admitted plotting with a monarchist group to topple the Islamic republic. He was said by the press agency to have admitted spending $40 million to carry out the plot with the help of military officers.

He had, however, denied plotting to kill the Ayatollah. About 70 Iranian officers have already been executed in connection with the plot charges. ---- A Man of Ambiguity By EDWARD A. GARGAN

From his alliance with Ayatollah Khomeini in 1978 to his death by firing squad last night, Sadegh Ghotbzadeh remained a man of ambiguity. In his conservative business suits, he appeared the moderate amid extreme Moslem fundamentalists. Yet, when he stripped off his tie, he stood firmly with the militant Iranians in his hatred of the Shah and his commitment to a new Islamic state.

When, on Nov. 4, 1979, Iranian students stormed the United States Embassy in Teheran, taking American hostages, Mr. Ghotbzadeh was already part of the inner council of the Ayatollah's Government. But not until December 1979 did he formally become Foreign Minister, the post from which he oversaw the negotiations for the release of the hostages. Member of Revolutionary Council

He was a member of the secretive 15-member Revolutionary Council, the body that exercised the highest political authority in Iran, accountable only to the Ayatollah. It was from that body that Mr. Ghotbzadeh drew the major part of his political power and the standing that permitted him to continue negotiating with the United States.
