In a move apparently aimed at heading off a possible primary challenge to Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi from Liz Cheney, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has announced it will back the incumbent senator in his run for re-election next year.
"The NRSC's main responsibility is to ensure the re-election of Republican senators on the way to the majority. We would obviously support Sen. Enzi if a challenge arises," NRSC Communications Director Brad Dayspring told The Hill Tuesday.
Enzi told the New York Times recently that Cheney, a former State Department official and the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, informed him that she is considering a run at his job even though Enzi and Cheney are close friends.
Cheney, who has spent most of her life in Virginia, has recently attended Republican events around Wyoming, sometimes accompanied by her father and mother, who are both still popular around the state.
Enzi has said he plans to run for a fourth term, although he hasn't made an official announcement.
"He’s focused on representing the state and people of Wyoming," Enzi spokesman Daniel Head told The Hill. "He loves his job, feels he's making a difference, finally has the committees he wants to be on, knows seniority counts, and knows how to use it. He is doing everything he can to continue to earn the respect of the people of Wyoming by working hard for them and representing them well."
Wyoming Republicans, meanwhile, are downplaying the possible primary matchup.
"Nobody's announced anything. There's no story right now," Wyoming GOP Chairwoman Tammy Hooper told The Hill. "As far as I know, Liz Cheney hasn't said, 'Yes, I'm running,’ and Sen. Enzi hasn't actually officially confirmed that he's running either."
Zitat...the National Republican Senatorial Committee has announced it will back the incumbent senator in his run for re-election next year.
Let them. They have a rotten track record so far. Didn't they back Dewhurst in TX and Greyson in KY? The grassroots said screw you and elected two of the better Senators we have. Cruz and Paul. Also Cheney would mop the floor with Enzi in that state. She has great name recognition and she is sharp as a tack. She is also an unapologetic Conservative. An endorsment by Palin would also be worth ten times what the NRSC could ever do.
