I would love to not pay for garbage channels I don't watch. If someone is really interested in Oprah and here bullshit, let them find their checkbook. Same goes for CNN, MSLSD and the Weather Channel...

Fox News is usually in the top 5.

Network executives -- whose bottom lines are boosted by as much as 50% from cable subscriber fees that have little to do with merit and everything to do with being able to muscle a cable provider into carrying a low-rated channel -- are, for obvious reasons, opposed to the idea of unbundling bundled cable. Some even claim that the profit loss would hurt the viewer the most because there would be less money to conduct the experimentation that produces the television shows we love so much.

Nobody is really buying that.

What really terrifies the big media conglomerates is how the end of bundled cable would financially devastate their companies and along with it the cultural stranglehold they enjoy that is propagated through artificial means. The end of bundled cable means the end of tens of billions of dollars per year earned only by forcing consumers to pay for something they don't use, and the end of dozens of channels -- like MSNBC, CNN, MTV, etc. -- that affect our culture and politics in the worst ways.

When you remove merit from television, what we are seeing now is what we get -- cultural, left-wing rot.

Something CNN and MSNBC might want to consider as the existential threat of cord-cutting looms over them (people who cancel cable television) is that one reason this might be happening is Obama's failed economy -- you know, the economy they keep telling us is acceptable--the one created by the president and the policies he champions…

If the economy actually was something close to acceptable, people wouldn't care about the size of their cable bills, which means we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion.

I have basic cable and I can barely watch it for all the crap they put out. The History and Biography stations seem to have gone missing entirely. If I could get those plus a few decent a la carte stations I'd be happy. DIY station used to be good, but I don't even know if they carry it anymore.

On the upside, I stumbled across the ME network. Awesome. Last night I watched "Naked City" and "The Fugitive." "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" was on a few nights ago too.

I can't wait to see what's on tonight. Oh, for the good old days.

I killed our cable(Comcast) earlier this week.
Over 200 channels of crap I never watch. The guy at Customer Service kept trying to get me to buy one of the smaller packages instead of just the internet.
I finally had to direct his answers to what the different speeds/billings on just the internet so he got the message I didn't want any of the crap TV anymore.

BTW,this all leads to the obvious question,"If 80 cable channels were to disappear,who would notice?".

For most of us this could probably be expanded to 200 channels.

For me,every sports and foreign language channel could disappear tomorrow and if it made my bill 10 dollars cheaper I'd be thrilled.

Especially the sports channels. Sports fans will pay whatever extra they have to pay to be able to watch sports 24/7,so why should the rest of us subsidize them?

As someone who does TV OTA, here are a few things i have noticed:

Analog is much sturdier signal than digital.
The number of channels available has been increasing since the mandated switch to digital.
Many OTA channels are devoted to reruns of oldie but goodie TV shows and movies.
There are many more OTA antennas available since the mandated switch to digital, especially for apartment dwellers.

My TV went in the dumpster in 1995--If I watch anything it is on my computer through some streaming sites and clips from you tube

One of the issues is im not sure if channels like the MLB Network would survive.

and the military and history channels which are pretty cool
