There is nothing more pathetic than watching the pom-pon squad take the field during a lopsided fourth quarter, and cheer enthusiastically for their son to be defeated team. The guys are all hanging their heads, hands on hips, wishing they could just go hit the showers, and hide until Monday’s practice from hell which would make losing hurt even more. Out come the pleated and pressed cheer leaders, with huge beaming smiles, yelling “fight and win ” completely oblivious to the realities of the situation.
In many ways our media have become just as innocuous and pathetic as bubble headed Rah Rahs who run out and the field to rally a crowd watching a blow out. With every economic release we have every media channel ( except for 1 ) telling us about the improving, and recovering economy. It is as if they feel obliged to spin things in a positive or more upbeat way. There are many who feel staying “positive” and “upbeat” will invigorate everyone to work harder, and do more, which will somehow lead us to economic victory. Perhaps the media feels somehow responsible for the masses, and feels it is better to lead us than to inform us. They see their role as cheer leaders, but we really need is an accurate score board.
If economic pundits continue to say that 1-2% growth is sign of a recovery, we are being mislead. If they continue to speak of the monthly job increases of 150-200k as a healthy sign, we are being mislead. If the producers of these outlets continue to hand pick the pundits based on their opinions, then we are not being informed, but rather are being “played” by these outlets. The producers of the show find speakers who will espouse the opinions of the network. There are hundreds of opinions out there, the networks just choose the ones they want to air.
