Here’s some news that has law enforcement officials and lawmakers scratching their heads:
Iowa is granting permits to acquire or carry guns in public to people who are legally or completely blind.
No one questions the legality of the permits. State law does not allow sheriffs to deny an Iowan the right to carry a weapon based on physical ability.
The quandary centers squarely on public safety. Advocates for the disabled and Iowa law enforcement officers disagree over whether it’s a good idea for visually disabled Iowans to have weapons.
Everybody take a deep breath. There are a couple of points to be made, here.
1: Blind and LEGALLY blind aren't necessarily the same thing. I personally know a retired Ford Motor Company union worker that retired from Ford on medical disability because he became legally blind, and he didn't even lose his drivers license. I saw him at a local stop and rob one day with his wife and kids in his car,and he told me they were going to town to go shopping. Then he put his sunglasses on,climbed behind the wheel of his car,and took off.
I have trouble seeing after dark, but can see just fine in daylight. I have cataracts and it really screws with my depth perception at night when headlights are shining in my eyes.
Does any of this mean I should no longer have guns or be able to defend myself with a gun? Even at night I can see good enough to shoot well enough to hit a target that big. I'd just have to shoot for center mass instead of taking a head shot.
2: How many people who really are blind are going to waste their money to buy a gun or pay for gun handling classes to get a permit that they have no hope of passing?
A final thought is that you can BELIEVE that media whores like Michael Moore are already looking for some in Iowa who already owns a gun and already has a permit that is now blind so they can make a poster boy out of them. I say "poster boy" because there is no way they are going to use a female because that would just highlight how women need protection more than men.
I wouldn't even put it past Dim operatives to be looking for a dedicated Dim who is blind, owns a gun,and has some sort of terminal illness to make shoot up a mall parking lot "for the cause" before he dies. If and when this happens, those of us who live in that area need to be committed to finding out everything about his background that can be discovered, including how he is connected with politically on a personal basis so we can expose them.
Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012)
What idiots. It's incidents like this that make me rather embarassed to be a conservative.
Why? It wasn't conservatives that pushed for Americans with Disability non-discrimination laws that guarantee federal charges against anybody that discriminates against someone with a disability.
Somewhere in America today there is a dwarf that is in a position to become a instant millionaire by suing the NBA for not hiring him.
Or a blind man or woman that is in a position to sue the NFA for not hiring them as wide receivers.

Quote: Justme wrote in post #5I'm legally blind without my contacts/glasses I can't legally drive without them but I can shoot at someone. Nope, not good.
Ok,so how many times are you away from home, carrying your gun,and without your contacts or glasses?
How many times are you even walking around in your home without your glasses on?

The point is twofold...they are giving them to the blind blind and when I do, and I do, go without them I have to refrain from certain activities. Shooting is one of them

Could it be that they when actually blind and moving about without the assistance of glasses or contacts the legally blind would know not to pick up the gun?
My brother was legally blind. Before his feet hit the floor in the morning he needed to put his glasses on. He could not do anything without them. He never even tried.
The self-policing that a legally blind person uses should be a reliable governing mechanism. Allow them the same rights if they can perform at the same level as those blessed with perfect vision.
