Happy times are all alike, nestled in the comfortable batting of peace, growth, and stability. Every unhappy time is unhappy in its own way.
America has been blessed because, since the end of the Great Depression, our nation has experienced only two periods of deep discontent that lasted a decade or more. The first was the 1970s. We are living through the second today. Which was worse?
"Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual." Thomas Jefferson
"If people can’t trust not only the executive branch but also don’t trust Congress, and don’t trust federal judges, to make sure that we’re abiding by the Constitution with due process and rule of law, then we’re going to have some problems here." - Barack Obama, June 7, 2013
The 1970s were worse by far. Just look at the cars of that era, if you don't believe me.
The last man nearly ruined this place he didn't know what to do with it. If you think this country's bad off now, just wait 'til [Zero's] through with it. ~Rufus T. Firefly, paraphrased from the blockbuster 1933 hit "Duck Soup"

Oh yeah? Just look at the prices those cars bring in today. You are in the minority on dissing the 70's. I thought they were fine.
I think today is worse. The economy is far worse today. The govt' is actively destroying jobs with Zerocare and regulations. The govt' is actively raising fuel prices. The govt' is actively pushing people onto welfare programs.

My sarcasm was a little too oblique, I see.
You're right, of course. But in the spirit of one of the threads yesterday, I'm just trying to be a little more lighthearted.
On the serious side, you don't even want to get me started on how many ways I think the times now are worse. Much worse.
Bottom line - we had no way of knowing it then, but the terrible political times of the Carter era at least had a Reagan waiting in the wings.
Sadly, there is no political solution on the horizon vis a vis the disaster known as Zero.

You are right. I have no idea how we ever turn off Bernanke's money pumps and suck back all those trillions of dollars without collapsing the whole thing. There will be no Paul Volker to ride in and save the day this time.
