If it wouldn't be a proven money waster it would be kind of nice to be able to travel this way. There has been talk here of doing the southern leg between Houston to Miami and up through Atlanta for a few years now.

It does go through flyover country and I'm sure it would have stops along the way. While I would no doubt cringe at the waste and the inefficiencies, I have a huge appreciation for the European train system.....at least outside of Italy. The geographies are obviously different and the start up costs insane, but part of me would love it. A train from SF to Florida? To NY?

What the heck does that have to do with it? I like trains and we can always print more money.....see AMTRAK. I wonder though, we already subsidize public transit out the..... Trains could be cost effective when compared to other wasteful government programs. It's all in your perspective. I've tried to use AMTRAK so many times but the cost is absurd and the length of time required ridiculous.

Hadn't heard re the trucking industry. I would have thought high speed rail lines are too damn expensive to maintain and that freight would not be allowed anywhere near it. Not my area obviously.

If America had established train transportation as the preferable mode of travel then this would not be a dream, it already would have happened.

We fell in love with cars, instead.

India set up their country with train transport as the preferable mode of travel. They can't get their hands on cars fast enough now that they have prosperity and upward mobility. Russia too. You will find that
only places were people keep using an 18th century tech, the train, to travel is where the govt' forces people too. It's an issue of freedom.
