Candidates have to answer questions. And Republicans are asked hundreds upon hundreds of gotcha questions and most of the time they effectively side step them.
Hoping that each and every GOP candidate across the nation won't "go there" is unrealistic.
Inevitably some GOPer will say something that is untoward or easily misconstrued.
Hoping this never happens or running off evrery GOP candidate who mis-speaks or defends someone else who did is not a winning strategy.

True. It isn't like the reporter is going to write in their article that they tried a "gotcha" question on a GOP member and failed. They'll just try, try, again!
Orthodoxy SUCKS.
"Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual." Thomas Jefferson

Of course there will be the gotcha questions but is his desire to further his career worth it at this time? He might win the primary but will he be able to win the general? He isn't the only conservative choice. One less toxic candidate who can win the general is better.
