9WSYR reported that a church in the small town of New Woodstock, NY had its annual pot luck dinner shut down by the local health department. Because the food to be served at the dinner was prepared in people’s homes, it was coming from “unapproved sources.”

300 people showed up on Saturday night, only to be told to take their food home. Director of Environmental Health for Madison County, Geoffrey Snyder, explained in an email why they nixed the Open Door Baptist Church’s 28th annual wild game dinner.

“A similar wild game dinner held in Oneida County prompted a costly and resource intensive State Health Department and NYSDEC investigation following the determination that illegal wild game infected with Mad Cow Disease was served.”

If the pot luck dinner wasn’t open to the public there would have been no problem. But since the church advertised it as a public event, they were required to comply with public health policy. The pastor of the church said he will work with health officials in planning next year’s event.

I don’t know, shouldn’t free people be able to make the decision as to whether or not they should risk attending an event featuring food from “unapproved sources.” It’s not like they would have been unaware that the food sources were unapproved seeing that it was advertised as a potluck dinner.

AT least the MENTALITY of the oligarchy and those sucking up to it . . . will increasingly be to shaft the Christian church every way they can.

This case seems like a fairly straightforward issue of public health--and with Mad Cow disease involved--rightly so. However, there will be those hostile to the cause of Christ who will jump on this mechanism to cause the churches across the land trouble.

You betcha. Shouldn't people be able to make their own decisions on what's safe to eat or not? Guess not, in the land of the used to be free and home of the cowards bending over for our new overlords for another kick.

Makes me think we should quit advertising our Easter Breakfast this year........

These kinds of laws tend to spread, and this federal government is fully behind them. School lunches, lemonade stands, bake-sales, pot-lucks.

It's a control thing, Palinista, and this is just one facet of it.

Depends on how much they are required to be at the beck and call of the federal government.

I'm not sure how long there will be such a thing as 'local control.'

It was a problem because of them advertising the pot luck to the public and wild game being served after there was a positive test for mad cow from wild game in the area. It wasn't the pot luck in and of itself that was the issue. I went to the original news source and it is less slanted. This event was publicized in the newspaper and the health department did try to contact the pastor prior to the event but he didn't respond. Would you really be fine if you had the misfortune of getting CJD because of not knowing that there were infections from wild game nearby but you were not informed until after getting infected?

This is what the local health department was trying to prevent from happening.

The pastor said he would work with the health department in the future in order to do it right. CJD is fatal 100% of the time. There is absolutely nothing that can be done once a person is infected.
