Ultimately, the "blame" for major decisions such as which campaign consultants to use rests in Romney's lap, as it was his campaign.
There were several tragic errors, most notably the election day GOTV fiasco.
I agree that Romney was ultimately responsible and mistakes were made.
But Romney relied on his party's establishment and their resources, and the establishment is no longer "excellent." GOTV is just one example. Failure of strategy, tactics and ideas is another example.
I do not think any Republican could defeat Obama in 2012 with what the Republican establishment had declined to be. It goes beyond Rove, to Republicans themselves. The voters. The online community. Too many backward, angry resentful people have status and visibility.
The voters that can be influenced either way look at some Republicans and say: "no way do I want to be associated with people like that."
