Governor Rick Perry comes to mind. Not a perfect candidate but a capable one.
I thought about him. I think he may be too polarizing. The uninformed masses would see GWB* in him, and it may make him less effective. Plus, he's quite conservative on some issues, and not on others - illegal immigration springs to mind.
* Even though he and W have never gotten along and have openly feuded on occasion.

The seat of Governor in the state of Texas is a weak position. The power resides with the Lt Governor. Personally, I have had my fill with Perry and his cronies over the last 10 years.
