President Obama’s handling of gay issues is the only policy area in which a majority of voters support his efforts, according to a new poll.
The CNN/ORC poll released Monday showed that 52 percent of Americans approve of Mr. Obama’s policies toward gays and lesbians, while 42 percent disapprove.
That’s his highest rating on any topic in the survey. On foreign affairs, 49 percent approve (with 41 percent characterizing North Korea as an immediate threat to the U.S., an all-time high for that question).
On taxes, 46 percent of voters approve of Mr. Obama’s approach. On gun policy, 45 percent approve. On the economy, his approval rating is 44 percent.
Mr. Obama also receives 44 percent approval on his handling of health-care policy, illegal immigration and Social Security and Medicare. And on the federal budget deficit, he scores only 38 percent approval.
Overall, those polled gave Mr. Obama a 51 percent job-approval rating, up four percentage points from the same survey on March 15 but down four points from his high of 55 percent in mid-January.
