A Brooklyn couple who hosted a radio show called "The Pursuit of Happiness" committed suicide together by putting plastic bags over their heads and inhaling helium.

It sounds like his wife needed serious medical intervention. And he must have needed it, too

I know of twin sisters who committed suicide. When it happened my mother asked me, "Why didn't one of them talk the other out of it? Why didn't one of them seek help? Why didn't one of them pause for a moment and think that TWO suicides might mean that the problem is bigger than just how they felt in the days leading up to their deaths? Why didn't one of them think of her own life, separate from that of her sister's?"

I never had any answers for her.

I'm not sure how I feel about suicide. I mean if you're done, I guess it's alright to leave.

But my concern is with how God judges it. I've heard He doesn't approve of suicide, but it doesn't seem to get that much attention in Scripture if you ask me.

TM, what does the Scripture say definitively about suicide?

My favorite pastor once said, "If the Bible is silent on the topic then we should be careful of thinking we know what God thinks about it."

Yes, I know that the Bible prohibits murder and people say this means we cannot shed our own blood.

But I don't know what God has said about suicide, specifically.

I do think He knows the minds and hearts of all men and He can understand why someone would commit suicide.

That doesn't mean that He likes it, though.

Logic would say the Author of Life hates it when we turn our gift back in like that,

but I honestly cannot think of anything that even broaches the topic from my years of reading the Word.

If you ever learn of Scripture that illuminates this further, I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

Until then I set suicide to the side and let God deal with those who have died prematurely.

I did read a comment where someone said that when a Christian commits suicide and they are greeted in heaven that the greeting is, "We didn't expect to see you so soon."

I liked that idea. It is comforting, somehow.

But it isn't Scripture, so I don't rely upon it.

Usually the obituary writers [ahem] like to say something like, "He died doing what he loved". A rock climber falls 1,000 feet to his death, his head smashed open on the rocks below and then the obit writere imagines that he was doing what he liked best. Excuse me but that was before he lost his grip and fell! Don't you understand that? He actually was doing what he liked best, then he fell. Then suddenly everything went terribly wrong and he died!!!

Oh well, if I was going to check out of this world alongside my wife I might choose something more "interesting" to be doing than struggling for my breath with a plastic bag over my head. I'd be thinking all the while, "What if I go through with this and she chickens out?"

It's a tough one.

Yeah but that rock climber knew the risks and decided it was worth it. You have several choices in life, never take a risk and live in your house watching TV for fun. Or you can choose to get out and do what you want, because life is short and we all end up in the same place: 6 feet under.

Excellent points! Whose happiness were they seeking? certainly not the clean up crew.

By definition love is giving. Happiness is found in giving ourselves away to others. It is both simple and profound.

It's clear they were on the wrong track, their way didn't satisfy or create happiness as they had boasted it would

and as the Scripture says, "When the blind lead the blind, they both fall into the ditch" John and Lynne, welcome to the ditch. or as others have said,

"you dug your grave, now lie in it."

With the minister from The Big Chill, "Are not the satisfactions of being a good man among our common men great enough to sustain us anymore?"

No real surprise. Every shrink I have ever met,including the amateur ones were nuts. That's why they went into that field. They wanted to cure themselves.
