Can you imagine? It just so happened we were in the midst of a Med-cruise, and there had been rumors (rumors? on a ship? say it ain't so!) that our ship would participate in the tall ships celebration that was to be held in New York harbor for the bi-centennial. I mean, it made sense - our ship being named "The America" and all.

Alas - the rumor (as rumors are wont to do) turned out to be false.

Instead, July 4, 1976 was spent in Naples. The USMC detachment did a nice job, though, of marching around the flight deck in their dress blues.

West Point?

I was 23--visiting a friend in Phoenix--my first trip west. I remember the advent of the Tall Ships at that time. It was awesome, and very patriotic!

I was 28, a husband, father, veteran, college graduate, homeowner in the first years of my corporate professional career.

I was also paying attention to history and political figures of the day. I was coming to know that Reagan was a free market capitalist, supporter of national security vs. world communism. I liked those things.

The next 4 years from 1976 until 1980 gave Jimmy Carter plenty of rope to hang himself, opening the door for Reagan.

Reagan was the best thing or America and for libertarian-conservatism, in my lifetime. We ought to spend more energy trying to convince others to join our thinking, on winning elections, and less on fringe kooks.

I was 20. That was quite a year, lots of good parties, plus I got my first real job, my first brand-new car, and met my (ex) husband.

Those were the days. Now they don't even want us to shoot off fireworks.
