If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that I spent most of that day in a van traveling from Red Oak, Iowa to Dodge City, Kansas for our next gig.

Yep I was around. I graduated from High School in '76. Our invitations, robes, class rings, everything was bicentennial themed.

As I think back watching the festivities on t.v. on the 4th it was pretty cool. As I recall they sailed the USS Constitution in the harbor and fired a cannon salute off the ship while t.v. crews filmed.

We've come a long way since the 60's and 70's and most of it is not a good change.

I wasnt around then so im just going by pictures. but I love love love the hair styles women had in the mid-late 60s. very attractive

Frank's post above is spot on. I remember lots of red-white-and blue on everything. Like the Cub Cadet lawn tractor, people can look back and remember that they bought an item in 1976 with those colors emblazoned upon it. Gawdy? Yep. But we're AMERICANS!

I was a 23 year old, serving in the Navy on board the USS AMERICA (of all things!)

Can you imagine? It just so happened we were in the midst of a Med-cruise, and there had been rumors (rumors? on a ship? say it ain't so!) that our ship would participate in the tall ships celebration that was to be held in New York harbor for the bi-centennial. I mean, it made sense - our ship being named "The America" and all.

Alas - the rumor (as rumors are wont to do) turned out to be false.

Instead, July 4, 1976 was spent in Naples. The USMC detachment did a nice job, though, of marching around the flight deck in their dress blues.
