Speaking at the White House on Friday, President Obama addressed the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial for the killing of Trayvon Martin for the first time since 2012, when he declared that if he had a son, he’d look like Martin. This time, Obama said, “Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.”

Obama also said, “Reasonable doubt was relevant, and they rendered a verdict. Once the jury's spoken, that's how our system works.”

Obama said he was "bouncing around" ideas with his staff on how to respond to the Zimmerman verdict, adding, "I think it is going to be important for us to do some soul searching." Pushing against Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, Obama stated, "If Trayvon Martin was of his age and armed, could he have stood his ground on that sidewalk?"

Finally, Obama went into the racial complexities of the Martin situation: "If a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different." He did say, "As difficult and as challenging as this whole episode has been, I don't want us to lose sight that things are getting better...We're becoming a more perfect union, not a perfect union, but a more perfect union."

What a totally disgusting president. I'm so ashamed that's he the president of the United States!! He, along with Eric Holder, are race baiters along the same order as Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson. They're trying to get even with white people for being white and fighting back against hoodlums that just happen to be black. What does he expect us to do, just roll over and play dead?????

I wonder if the reactions Obama and the Dems are showing will impact their Hispanic voter base and if the gop will point it out how much they dislike the Hispanic community

Personally, I heard the speech on the radio and it sounded like he was totally backing down from all past comments. Bringing up states rights, clarifying his "If I had a son" comment, spinning that he really really is black. The whole thing was hilarious. I guess they just found out that no one gives a shit about this case.

"We are deeply honored and moved that President Obama took the time to speak publicly and at length about our son, Trayvon. The President’s comments give us great strength at this time. We are thankful for President Obama’s and Michelle’s prayers, and we ask for your prayers as well as we continue to move forward.

We know that the death of our son Trayvon, the trial and the not guilty verdict have been deeply painful and difficult for many people. We know our family has become a conduit for people to talk about race in America and to try and talk about the difficult issues that we need to bring into the light in order to become a better people.
