The U.S. Postal Service, looking to cut costs after losing $16 billion last year, defaulting twice on money it owed the federal government, and blowing through a $15 billion line of credit from the U.S. Treasury, is considering cutting out doorstep delivery of mail and replacing it with centralized locations where citizens could pick up their mail.

CNN Money reports that GOP Rep. Darrell Issa, who is leading the charge to save the Postal Service, said, "A balanced approach to saving the Postal Service means allowing USPS to adapt to America's changing use of mail."

Mailworker unions are furious. Jim Sauber, chief of staff for the National Association of Letter Carriers, told CNN, "It's madness. The idea that somebody is going to walk down to their mailbox in Buffalo, N.Y., in the winter snow to get their mail is just crazy."

But those in favor of the change cite its advantages over cutting Saturday service, another idea which has been considered.

No skin off my nose. For the 34 years that I have lived here, my mail is delivered a block away, on the main road. For packages that dont fit in the mail box (which are most of them), they leave a notice and you have to go to the postoffice (just over a mile away). Nothing is delivered to your door..ever..the trucks dont even come in the block. Luckily, people in this semi-rural area, which has grown a good deal since I moved here, are honest. Very often, the mailman puts things in the wrong boxes. Also, these boxes arent locked, so anyone can just walk by and collect your mail..or destroy it.

UPS and fedex deliver to the door..but for the longest time, UPS seemed to think we were the people up the road. Thats where all my deliveries ended up, until I had this computer delivered last year. As soon as I purchased it..I was on the phone for a half hour with UPS..explaining my situation..and telling them that THIS delivery had better end up at my door. It did.

Well on the upside this should be the death knell of junk mail.

I'll be darned if I'm going to drive across town to a pick-up point and the box is full of junk.

I'll just let the post office empty it at that point.

I dont think it will end junk mail. That mail pays their bills.

I have to wonder what these centrally located mailboxes will cost them. Wouldnt that be like having a post office box? Hmm..I then wonder if they expect people to pay for these boxes.

They should have just stopped daily deliveries and make them a few times a week. Many times, we dont collect our mail for a few days, anyway.

Nothing like a little inside info.

I always thought it was very difficult to get a job in the post office. People seemed to always make a big deal out of it if they knew someone who "got in".

The mailmen here dont walk..they ride. You cant walk on these roads. They are winding and narrow and weeds come right up to the road, no shoulders...so they have to ride..and half the ride is on the wrong side of the road..holding up traffic..lol

I really cant complain..most times, the mail gets thru..with very few missed days...however, when it snows, if you dont shovel in front of the mailboxes, you wont get any mail until you do. It seems the guy on the corner, closest to the mail boxes does it most times..but, my husband has gone down there many times, if he sees it wasnt done.

Thats crazy. But, this is why the workforce in this country stinks now a days...and it isnt only the post office.

When my kids were growing up, I had several part time jobs. I guess I was raised "old school" where you gave a job your all. No matter what type job I happened to have, you had to see how the workers abused their jobs. Goofing off, pretending to be busy, making phone calls, chatting up other workers, so now two people werent working. I worked with this one person who worked full time, but watching what was going on, she could have worked part time. The morning started by her giving me the 3rd degree on where I got those shoes or nail polish and what I did the night before. When that ended, she started with personal phone calls..one after the other. Then, she would hide her lunch in her top drawer, eat it at 11 and leave to go to lunch at 12. I dont know what she did after 1pm, because I left..what I do know is..she was only working a half day, that is..if she even worked when I left. I also see it every day on facebook..people who you KNOW are at work..yet their computers are tuned in and they are posting. I cant say everyone does that. I am sure there are jobs around where it is impossible to goof off..but, things sure arent the way they used to be.
