Not trying to change anybody's mind but I figured I present an Israeli's perspective.
Maybe Congress should green light the proposed Obama Syrian attack, something about which we here have great queasiness about doing.
A friend well-versed in Mideast affairs, and who is a passionate supporter of Israel and opponent of Islamic radicalism, sent me the following (slightly edited) note in response to a request for his opinion.
1. The time when the civil war in Syria could have been relatively easily turned to the US’s advantage, is long gone. If Obama had recognized that Syria was merely an Iranian proxy that could be wrested from it and thereby weaken the nuclear-seeking regional hegemon, we would be in much better shape than we are now. There once was a significant non-Islamist opposition. Now the situation is far more complicated.
2. Announcing way in advance that he was merely going to “send a message” has allowed Assad to move his troops around and probably further cache his WMDs. Another amateur hour mistake.
Thank you so much for posting links to your original content here T7 (even though I couldn't help channeling your old "friend" HG before! )!! Not sure that I agree with your friend as he seems (like most people) to take much at face value, but having you post your material here adds a lot of texture to our forum!!
