A man may have set himself on fire Friday afternoon on the National Mall in Washington, police and witnesses reported.
The unidentified man was “conscious and breathing” when firefighters arrived, a D.C. police spokeswoman told The Washington Post. He was airlifted to a hospital; his condition was not immediately known.
The spokeswoman said police did not yet know the cause of the fire.
Witnesses told NBC Washington that the man poured gasoline on himself, then possibly set himself on fire about 4:20 p.m.. Several joggers took off their shirt to extinguish the flames.
Other witnesses told CNN they saw a red gasoline can next to the man, who was near the Air and Space Museum. U.S. Park Police closed an area of the mall 7th Street between Constitution Avenue NW and Independence Avenue SW.
I can hear the 911 call now, with the operator asking for a description, and the guy on the phone saying,he's the guy that's on fire. His fire may be out by the time you get here, but if so he will be the guy that is smoking and looking like a crispy critter."
