Republicans are walking into a trap and they don’t even realize it.

They are about to consider, in the House of Representatives, legislation by Congressman Upton that would allow people to keep their insurance plans.

There’s a problem though. It is widely acknowledged that Congressman Upton’s legislation is more messaging than substance. His legislation does not have anything in it that can force insurance companies, in the topsy-turvy world of Obamacare, to keep insurance plans going.

But there is a plan than does. Senator Mary Landrieu has written legislation in the United States Senate that the Democrats love. It mandates insurance companies have to keep people on their present insurance. The GOP is supposedly against mandates and against government forcing private businesses and individuals into contracts they don’t want.

Here’s what is going to happen.

The House, with the help of a good number of Democrats, will pass the Upton plan and send it to the Senate. Harry Reid will substitute the Landrieu plan and send it back to the House. The House will be forced to either vote for the Landrieu plan or be characterized as siding with insurance companies against people.

No, Erick, that is not what is going to happen.

Here's what is going to happen.

Republicans will strengthen the Upton bill in the House and add amendments in the Senate effectively repealing ObamaCare and dare the Democrats not to vote for it.

Erick, is there a shark anywhere in the political world which you haven't jumped?

I don't understand wishing for Republicans to fail. Even Ezra Klein: Obamacare is in much more trouble than it was one week ago sees this is a bad move

First, understand what we’re talking about when we discuss the Upton plan. Erick Erickson worries that a bill offered by Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., represents a trap for Republicans and opponents of Obamacare. He concludes, “the Republicans should not be helping Democrats with their re-election plans, which is all [they] are doing with Upton/Landrieu.”

The concern has some validity, as is Ben Howe’s worry that passage any bipartisan bill would transform Obamacare into a disaster enacted by Democrats to a only slightly-less worse disaster enacted by both parties. But the Upton and Landrieu proposals do a heck of a lot more than just help Democrats insist they’re trying to do something to help those losing their plans.......

Who else just called the Upton bill as a tool to “subvert” Obamacare? David Axelrod.

Put another way, if the Upton bill’s primary impact really was just to provide cover for Democrats, why would Obama and his closest allies be fighting it tooth and nail? Why are they arm-twisting their own members to not vote for something that could provide them some political cover?

We all know when your enemy is self-destructing the best course is too stand back and just let it happen. But nooooo, for some reason the GOP would prefer to have this stink all over themselves. Whoop-de-doo, then the Lamestreamers can all hoot and holler that it was a BIPARTISAN train wreck, dontcha know. "BIPARTISAN"..."BIPARTISAN"..."BIPARTISAN"...
