“The List.” Almost everyone is in favor of background checks, with polls showing anywhere from 85 percent to 95 percent of respondents saying would-be gun purchasers should undergo a background check before they can walk out of a store packing heat. But a check against what? Did the person commit a crime? Who gets included on “the list” of people who can’t own a gun?

That leaves Obama and Democrats stuck with pushing for an assault-weapons ban, even though the last ban (from 1994 to 2004) grandfathered in existing assault rifles and allowed manufacturers to change a few specs on their new rifles to dodge the standards. It hardly seemed worth the effort.

Who’s Gonna Pay? Any efforts to shore up safety in schools or take care of people who have mental disabilities or simply prosecute more unlawful gun buyers will cost money. And money is in short supply these days at both the federal and state levels.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., pointed out in an op-ed on Tuesday that even the most commonsense ideas for curbing gun violence cost money. If you want to see a huge drain on a state or local treasury, try increasing the federal prosecutions for gun crimes, rather than using more lenient state laws, and incarcerating more of those those found guilty for longer. When Kaine was Virginia’s governor, that’s exactly what he did, as well as paying for strengthened standards on mental-health treatment and an expansion of community services.

Additional security in school would cost very little if the sheriff would let teachers be deputies as volunteers and under go training if they are non military. Cost is just s boogie man, police departments that have cops chasing speeders and hookers have man power to protect schools.

As to menal, if you have taken and /or t,ake drugs for a mental problem you should not be allowed to own firearms, without a court hearing saying you are now ok.

I happen to agree with that one. It wouldn't cost the state or cities or even the schools anything for a teacher to be packing. And all it would have taken in CT was one or 2 teachers packin heat and knowing how to use it to change the course of events and those 26 kids might still be alive if they had been.

What I'm concerned about is the "Defining Mental Illness" point. Who gets to do that? Washington? Already mentally incompetent Congress critters? Liberal psychologists with an agenda? A Psychotic President with a grudge against 'dissenters' ?

Serious questions.

And executive orders have no force outside the federal employees and then congress can defund those, with a simple no money will be spent statement. Obama has no power to give me and you orders.
