The Journal News knows they’re screwed after the recent break-ins of gun owners listed on their map and they’re using Cuomo’s new law as a convenient excuse to take it down. I had a lawyer friend read the law yesterday to see if it required the Journal News to remove its map and he was certain it did not.
Via Politico:
Ed Tagliaferri, the executive vice president of DKC Media, forwards this statement from Janet Hasson, Publisher of the Journal News, the New York state-based newspaper that published the “gun map” featuring the names and addresses of gun owners in Westchester and Rockland counties:
“With the passage this week of the NYSAFE gun law, which allows permit holders to request their names and addresses be removed from the public record, we decided to remove the gun permit data from lohud.com at 5 pm today.
While the new law does not require us to remove the data, we believe that doing so complies with its spirit. For the past four weeks, there has been vigorous debate over our publication of the permit data, which has been viewed nearly 1.2 million times by readers. One of our core missions as a newspaper is to empower our readers with as much information as possible on the critical issues they face, and guns have certainly become a top issue since the massacre in nearby Newtown, Conn. Sharing as much public information as possible provides our readers with the ability to contribute to the discussion, in any way they wish, on how to make their communities safer.
We remain committed to our mission of providing the critical public service of championing free speech and open records.”
The editor still lives in a house worth millions and has hundreds of thousands in jewelry and silver in her house and she has no gun. Probably a member of peta and has ten mink coats.
I would imagine their lawyers were telling them with all the recent developments that to continue their practices was inviting larger and larger mega-dollar punitive damages lawsuits. I.e. the depraved mind, etc, that juries love to punish. That being said, they are probably too late. I hope they and their parent corp Gannet are sued into oblivion over this.
Quote: Brevity wrote in post #6No, to feel the heat would have been EVERY single person on their map standing outside thier house in protest.
Wouldn't you just love to see that happen? American people are so gullible and complacent that's it's hard to get us to fight as a group with our "let someone else do it" mentality. Imagine the things we could change if we stood together!
Why not? They got what they want. New York is now a minefield for gunowners. I tried to read the statute [I'm a former prosecutor and Appeals lawyer], and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. But between registration, inconvenience, etc, it's going to be hell [As soon as I can, I'm selling out and heading to either Wyoming or Texas]. And that's only until they next time they tighten the screws-tighter.
I live in NY. The two counties they exposed are on my borders. Rockland county is just over the Bear Mt Bridge from me..and Westchester, where I was born..is just a mile down the road.
I am very proud to say..that MY county, Putnam..is the county who would NOT release that information to them. They were also asked and were denied..and they were going to be fought against, tooth and nail. My husband hunts, therefore..we have guns. He also has a CC permit. Our county is very quiet and one of the safest counties in NY. We sure didnt want our info out there.
There was already one break in of a gun owner, on their list (in westchester)..and they stole jewelry and tried to open his gun safe. (failed) MSM is trying to downplay the guy being on that list.
Whatever this newspaper (local to these counties) gets, it deserves.
By the way..you ALREADY have to register a handgun in NY. It has always been that way. It is also very difficult to get a CC permit..it takes almost a year. And..it has always been that way, also. And if you manage to get one, you cannot carry in NYC.
