This is just my 2 cents on this topic, if we had a couple of informal "rules" that we all followed, such as:
1. Keep all of the meta-conversations (i.e., posts about the nature and motivations, etc. about the posts in the thread) out of the threads. PM if so desired. 2. Keep all of the 3rd person references to a minimum (especially since we have no "ping" function). It really doesn't help a topic to have posts like "Ehh, Poster-A really doesn't mean what she/he is saying here" or "I think Poster-B has issues with {blah, blah, blah}" spread throughout the thread. Again, PM is a better vehicle for those types of conversations/observations.
In fact, I believe that these 2 "rules" have actually been followed pretty much by almost everyone that actively posts here, for the most part. Maybe just a friendly "reinforcement" will help things along...
Like any other issue in life, the sooner that something is nipped in the bud, the better. I don't think that we have an out of control problem at all, it is just that a couple of threads here and there tip over the edge on these counts. I would bet that a good 95+% of the threads here all proceed without any of those types of posts occurring, at least from the threads that I have read.

I know that, and that's what I have appreciated most about this forum.
My concern (and I'm not alone in it) is that it's now going to be something that happens more often. There was no reason at all for what happened yesterday. It could have been handled civilly, but it wasn't. (Not referring to steph's handling, which was stellar!)
What we have here is unique, IMO, and I don't want anyone messing with it.
Seriously, this site will not suffer fools lightly, ok? Yesterday was kinda good in a few ways. When pushed posters feel free to push back and I like that. As it got downright silly we decided what action to take and quick draw Steph moved things fast to regain order. The other mods can and will do the same.
Posts will be moved and given a new thread to continue to hash out derails in vanities. We wont be deleting or censoring posts (for the most part.) There is no way we will give cover for bad behavior. I think we already lost MJ/NJ due to a similar thing I think we learned from that.
Things get heated sometimes, but that doesn't mean we don't brush ourselves of and go make fun of liberals and put it behind us and continue. Oh and never forget, we ban

Are you saying if we're insulted that we aren't to defend ourselves?

No, never. What do you think this is, TBL?
If the insult grows into a conversation or debate, we will create a new thread in vanities and move the posts over so the original thread can continue on the original topic. The new thread in vanities will reflect the insult, the following replies and a continued discussion.
