I am no great fan of Morgan Freeman's politics. As an actor I admire him but not otherwise. Here is his take on this and like tragedies and it makes some sense.

Quite true, Steph: You can't force someone to get mental health treatment if they haven't made it known that they are having homicidal or suicidal thoughts.

But it is precisely that for which assisted outpatient treatment laws are designed. Under such laws, usually, a person can be evaluated in an ED even if against his will and if the doctor suspects something is amiss, then committed for a 72 hour psychiatric evaluation.

We will never know if his mother would have availed herself of such a law but we do know that in CT she didn't even have the opportunity.

We glorify the shooters and turn them from unknowns into instant celebrities.

Your point is well taken Palinista but I don't think the issue "glorification" aspect applies to the normal person, but instead to other possible shooters who don't consider the opprobium these people deseverdly receive but rather the attention they garner.

I don't think all of us glorify the shooters. There are some that do. There are others that can see how damaging that would be.

The father and brother of one of the Columbine victims have done a very good job of talking about their daughter and sister who was killed. She was the Christian girl that was asked, "Are you a Christian?' before she was killed. Her answer was "Yes."

The brother has gone on to build a ministry out of the lessons he learned. He learned to forgive his sister's killer. He is hoping that he can teach others about forgiveness. I wish him success.

You can force just about anyone at anytime to have mental tests, all it takes is filing the correct paperwork in a court of law and it happens everday.

I'd like to think I would say I am a Christian, but I don't know exactly how I would respond. I don't know that anyone could know until they were placed in that position. For the girl my understanding was that she didn't have a lot of time to think. She just responded.

She never would know how her response would resonate with others.

No, of course we don't all glorify the shooters (that was a societal 'we'), but the shooters do become celebrities of a sort, due to the continuous coverage, and a certain kind of mental illness or whatever else would cause this kind of behavior, might respond to the notoriety.

Obviously we don't what was going on in this deeply disturbed young man's head and heart.

There was a book written about that young Christian girl, wasn't there? With a title something like "She Said Yes."......

The courage of that young woman was remarkable, and it makes one pause and wonder what our own response would be if we knew we would be killed if we said "Yes."

Hmmmm.............just did a little research on the book, and it seems that it might not have even happened. Yes, she was shot, but her parents may have made up the part about her saying yes.
