The gunman in the Newtown massacre tried unsuccessfully to buy a rifle three days before he killed 20 children, six adults and himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Connecticut and federal officials told NBC News Saturday.

Adam Lanza, 20, went to a Dick's Sporting Goods store in Danbury, Conn., on Tuesday to buy the weapon, but was turned down because he didn't want to undergo a background check or abide by the state's waiting period for gun sales, the officials said...

The weapons he used were were legally purchased and registered to his mother, two law enforcement officials said. Two 9mm handguns were recovered inside the school. An AR-15-type rifle also was found outside.


According to this then the system worked. The guns he used were essentially "stolen" or mommie dearest indulged her baby boy. Otoh, why did he try to purchase some weapons if he already had access to some pretty heavy firepower?

There are also reports Lanza may have had a confrontation with school officials the day before the killings.

The motive for the mass killing was unknown, but officials told NBC's Pete Williams that they were investigating whether Lanza is the person who had an "altercation" with four staff members at the school on Thursday.

Three of the four were killed Friday in one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. The fourth staff member was not at school that day and is being interviewed by federal and state investigators, Williams said.

But last year, his administration took a less muted tone as it submitted its 2012 Education Department budget to Congress that eliminated the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) funding, which for years provided between $20 million and $30 million in annual grants to help schools create emergency and crisis preparation and prevention plans for tragedies just like the one that unfolded Friday...

The town of Newtown, Conn., in fact, took advantage of one of these programs in 2000 when it got $125,000 in funds from the COPS in Schools program, Justice Department records show.

"Our hearts are broken today," President Barack Obama said, wiping a tear from his eyes as he reacted to the tragedy.

This must be the only program he ever cut and while I am all in favor of lowering government spending, my real point here is how this part of the story would have been treated if GW were still President. Think it would have become a major issue? My guess is there will now be calls for renewed spending but do you think the MSM will point out how The Great Golfer was responsible for the cuts in the first place or will you only see this story in this relatively obscure publication and on here?

So the tougher buying laws worked. He was still determined to obtain a weapon. He showed signs of problems right before the shooting and the zer0 administration cut the one program that could have provided more security to the school.

Respect for the families, is it? Note how this studio doesn't simply withdraw the film completely, as it is apparently quite violent and involves a sniper. Nor do we hear anyone from tinsel town declaring the movie industry should clean up its act and quit releasing films that glorify violence, mayhem, blood and guts, destruction, and the like. No, of course not. Most of the comments I have seen coming out of the Hollywood community (posted elsewhere on this Forum) are calling for...30 second pause...gun control. Surprise!

He did not cut spending he needed the money for his vote buying program. It is a safe bet his people registered this mental nut to vote for him. It is also a safe bet that obama and nato killed thousands of little kids in Libya.

I am no great fan of Morgan Freeman's politics. As an actor I admire him but not otherwise. Here is his take on this and like tragedies and it makes some sense.

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

Months Before Shooting, “Civil Liberties” Groups Defeated Conn. Law Aimed at the Violent Mentally Ill

And here’s a fact you might not know – Connecticut is one of only SIX states in the U.S. that doesn’t have a type of “assisted outpatient treatment” (AOT) law (sometimes referred to as “involuntary outpatient treatment”). There’s no one standard for these types of laws, but (roughly speaking) these are laws that allow for people with mental illness to be forcibly treated BEFORE they commit a serious crime. Whereas previous legal standards held that the mentally ill cannot be institutionalized or medicated until they harm someone or themselves, or until they express an immediate intent to do so, AOT laws (again, roughly speaking) allow for preventative institutionalization or forced medication (I highly recommend reading the data cited in the link I provided in this paragraph, especially regarding what is known as “first episode psychosis”).

AOT laws vary state-by-state, and often bear the name of a person murdered by an untreated mentally ill person (“Kendra’s Law” in New York, “Laura’s Law” in California, etc.).

Earlier this year, Connecticut considered passing an AOT law (and a weak one, at that), and it failed, due to protests from “civil liberties” groups.

And here’s my point. I have NO idea, as in ZERO, as in NADA, as in ZILCH, whether that law, had it passed, would have made a difference in the case of the Newtown killer. I’m not claiming to know, and that’s not the point of this piece. My point is, when mental health experts advocated a law that might reduce the violence caused by mentally ill people who are untreated, “rights” advocates shot it down. The risk that innocent people might be murdered was not as important as the fact that the mentally ill might lose their “right” to walk around untreated.

The source contains a link of an ACLU official testifying in opposition to the law before the CT legislature. As the author notes we will never know if such a law might have prevented this tragedy, but we do know its absence didn't help.

Would his mother have sought help for him, even if involuntary? She knew his behavior was worsening and of late had taken to burning himself with a lighter.

He was a legal adult. His mother's hands were tied as far as getting help goes. You can't force someone to get mental health treatment if they haven't made it known that they are having homicidal or suicidal thoughts. Then it's not a guarantee.
