I think the official oil portraits are done in the preparation for the end of the term. Which makes me wonder, did the Obamas already have paintings done of them? I mean, when do presidents do that, if they don't know for certain that they'll be re-elected?

The oil paintings are not usually done till well after the term of office is over. That is why their predecessors usually are at the unveiling.

I know that women have been doing that for ages, I can't recall some of the more famous ones. I never understood why, can anyone explain why that process is done? (I guess that I can understand if they get burned off somehow, but beyond that, why is it done?)
