Rand Paul: Republican Party Can Grow If It Accepts Something Different Than “Cookie Cutter” Conservatives
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) joined Chris Wallace for an exclusive interview on Fox News Sunday. Paul won this year’s CPAC presidential preference straw poll. He garnered support from Democrats and Republicans for his recent filibuster on the government’s drone program.
In a conversation with the Republican National Committee chairman, he spoke about how the GOP can be competitive on the West Coast, Illinois and New England.
He said some of those ideas were a more libertarian approach to things. “I think that a lot of young people are attracted to that and our party could grow if we accepted something maybe a little bit different than the cookie cutter conservatives that we put out in the past.”
“I think the legislature is about 10 years behind the public,” the senator said. “For example, I’ve introduced amendments to quit sending money to Egypt, and build bridges here in the United States instead of in Egypt. I’ll bet you 90 percent of the American people agree with me but 80 percent of my senators disagree with me. So I would argue the Senate isn’t up to date with what the American people really want.”
Thanks for the link. We tend to forget that Cal Coolidge and Barry Goldwater, to name a few, were of a libertarian bent in that there were for small government ,low taxes, and state's rights.
Paul his heading down the right path with this talk, but he batter be careful. If he goes into his wacko fathers territory of full out isolationism, he is done.
