Only a man utterly blinded by party loyalty sees that statement by Rubio has anything less than a complete disaster. There's nothing there to misinterpret, it stands all on its own. However a brainwashed sycophant is going to do all he can to spin it into something positive and attack those who accurately interpret the words.

The facts on the ground in Syria prove Rubio's statement is completely absurd. Ignoring those facts hurts your case not mine.

So basically Rubio is advocating that we befriend our own avowed enemy: Al Qaeda. (See above usatoday story: Syrian Rebels Pledge Loyalty to Al-Qaeda).

In other words giving aid and comfort to our enemy. I believe that's treason.

With the above facts, there is simply no justification to defend this statement by Rubio. But watch the GOPe spin themselves silly trying!
